If you feel called to the priesthood or the diaconate I would encourage you to talk with the parish clergy. Diaconate is one of the ancient orders serving the church. St. Francis of Assisi is one of the most famous deacons along with St. Steven the first martyr.
Deacons assist with the administration of the church, with education or with caring for the poor. Because of these works they also assist with the liturgy and represent the people at the altar. Priests are called to be servants to the people of God and administer the sacraments.
Ordination to diaconate and priesthood is open to both men and women , married and single, gay and straight. Some will be called forth from Diaconate to Priesthood. We do not make a distinction between transitional and permanent deacons.
